Letters of Intent — Atlantic Genome Centre
The Atlantic Genome Centre (one of five centres that will support genomics research via contracts with Genome Canada) is requesting letters of intent of up to 1,000 words from universities, hospitals, research institutes, industry and governments for large-scale projects in fundamentals of comparative genomics, bioinformatics and computational biology, as well as in applications in the sectors of health, forestry, agriculture, fisheries (including aquaculture) and environment. Suitable large-scale projects could involve a number of technology platforms such as DNA sequencing , functional genomics and proteomics, bioinformatics, genotyping, and technology development. In addition, large-scale research projects are solicited on GEELS (focused on the ethical, environmental, legal and social issues related to genomics). The deadline for receipt of letters of intent is Oct. 2.

Cystic Fibrosis research
The Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation invites applications to its October 2000 grants and awards competition. The foundation offers research grants, scholarships, fellowships, and graduate studentships. The deadline for receipt of applications at the foundation is Oct. 2.

Applied Health Program
The Kidney Foundation of Canada is offering allied health research grants to a maximum of $50,000 per year for a two-year period. The foundation is also offering allied health doctoral fellowships as well as scholarships for full-time and part-time study at the masters, doctoral, or nurse practitioner level. The program is aimed at developing allied health researchers and encouraging research by allied health professionals in the areas of nephrology, urology, and organ donation. The application deadline for research grants is Oct. 15; for fellowships and scholarships, the application deadline is April 1.

Kidney Foundation grants
The Kidney Foundation of Canada offers research grants of up to $50,000 per year as well as postdoctoral fellowships and faculty scholarships in support of research to further current knowledge pertaining to the kidney and urinary tract. The deadline for application is Oct. 15.

Call for nominations
Nominations are invited from individuals, corporations, organizations and government for the National Merit Award. This award honours outstanding achievement in Canada’s life sciences sector and will be presented at the 7th Annual OLSC Gala Achievements Awards Dinner on Dec. 5, 2000. Applications are available at the OLSC Web site www.olsc.ca and must be submitted by deadline Oct. 27.

McEachern Fellowships
The Canadian Cancer Society offers McEachern Fellowships each with a value of $57,000 plus an allowance for travel and tuition. The fellowships are intended to provide an opportunity for physicians to obtain clinical training in oncology on a full-time basis. Fellowships are open to individuals who have completed three years of postgraduate training after award of MD degree. The deadline for application is Oct. 30.

Prix Galien Canada
Nominations are sought for the 2001 Prix Galien Canada (Research). This prize is awarded to the researcher or the research team judged to have made the most significant contribution to pharmaceutical research in Canada. It is open to any person or team from academia, health care institutions, research centres or industry who have been involved for at least the last five years in bio-pharmaceutical research leading, or making a substantial contribution, to the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of diseases. The deadline for submission of nominations is Oct. 31.

Lung Association research programs
The Canadian Lung Association offers research grant programs through the Canadian Nurses’ Respiratory Society and the Canadian Physiotherapy Cardio-Respiratory Society. One-year grants of between $3,000 and $30,000 for research and feasibility studies are offered to registered nurses undertaking research investigations related to nursing management of patients with respiratory disease and symptoms. One-year research grants of between $12,000 and $20,000 are offered to physiotherapists undertaking investigations related to management of patients with respiratory disease. The application deadline for both programs is Nov. 1.

Stanford Humanities fellowships
The Office of Research has received information on the external fellowship opportunities available through the Stanford Humanities Centre. As in previous years, senior and junior fellowships are available as well as shared research group fellowships for senior scholars and for postdoctoral fellows. In addition, a new program of funding (Rockefeller Fellowships in Black Performing Arts) has been introduced. The application deadline for the Rockefeller fellowships is Nov. 1; for the other fellowship programs, it is Nov. 15; and for the shared research group fellowships for postdoctoral scholars, the next application deadline will be May 15, 2001.

Hemophilia research
The Canadian Hemophilia Society invites applications for grants for scientific research in fields relevant to hemophilia. One or two-year grants with a maximum value of $50,000 per year are offered. Applications must be received by deadline Nov. 15. Four-month studentships are also available for the summer of 2001. These are open to medical students in any year and to science students in 3rd or 4th year. The deadline for application is also Nov. 15.
