At the Annual Meeting of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), held June 10-14, 2000, in Dallas, TX, Wajira Ratnayake won the third place prize for his paper titled Structure and Physiochemical Properties of Field Pea Starches. The paper was co-authored by Ratnajothi Hoover and Dr. Fereidoon Shahidi of the Biochemistry Department. The meeting was attended by over 25,000 participants.
Namal Senanayake, a PhD student, was the Honoured Students Award Winner and Biotechnology Student Paper Award First-Place Winner at the 91st Annual meeting of the American Oil Chemists Society (AOCS) held April 25-28, 2000, in San Diego, CA. His paper titled Characterization of Enzymatically Synthesized Structured Lipids Containing Linolenic Acid and Long-Chain T-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, was co-authored with Dr. Fereidoon Shahidi of the Biochemistry Department. The first award was in recognition of outstanding overall accomplishments of Mr. Senanayake in his graduate studies at MUN.
A team of four graduate students, M.A. Khan, W. Ratnayake, N. Senanayake and Z. Yu have been invited to participate in the National Student Competition of the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology (CIFST) during its annual meeting in Winnipeg, July 15-19, 2000.
