This year's edition of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science's Open House was held on Saturday Feb 27. An annual event, the Engineering Open House attracts a mixture of children's groups, families, and interested members of the general public. As the kick-off to National Science and Engineering Week, the event amply demonstrated this year's theme: Engineering is all around us.
But apart from the entertainment value of the Open House, the school sees the event as an important aspect of educating the public about engineering matters. Jim Cooper, faculty manager/finance and administration, recalled the evolution of the event fr om humbler beginnings to its current version, which involves the cooperation of students, technical staff, faculty and industrial partners.
"Every year the feedback we get from various groups - parents, guidance counsellors, young people - is always positive," he said, adding that he gets congratulatory e-mails on behalf of the faculty from all over campus.
As the accompanying photos attest, this year's event was another unqualified success.
