Brian Ricks

Brian Ricks Photography has been offering black and white art photographs and commercial services since 1996.

"I still like to shoot black and white film for my art work. The final output is classic and true in its appearance. Newfoundland lends itself to black and white film: the subject matter, scenery and light. The subtleties are captured without distractions." Brian Ricks

Although Brian is known for his memorable images of outport Newfoundland, he doesn't consider himself a landscape photographer. Brian points out that all of his images contain a building, garden, tool or person. There is always the trace of the human among the rocks, blowing grass or constantly moving waves. They are portraits of our intimate connection to this island and especially the water. The strength of Brian's images is that he is able to capture the picturesque and the emotional without sentimentality or cliché. The images are potent but understated. And Brian brings the same lack of pretension to his commercial photography in digital colour. " I really enjoy working with other people to create images, I prefer it over working alone. Then, I think everyone involved deserves the credit for the final result." Brian says.
