Instrumental Dance Tunes

Instrumental dance tunes are performed in this collection by either accordion players or fiddlers. Newfoundland set dances, such as Lancers, American Eight, or Running the Goat, are characterized by lengthy and elaborate, multi-part choreographies. Individual tunes for different sections were "singles" (duple or quadruple metre in moderate tempo), jigs (in six-eight metre, often played very fast in Newfoundland), and reels (in quadruple metre, at a fast tempo).   Jig and reels are sometimes labeled "doubles" and "triples" in Newfoundland, clearly without reference to the metre but likely connoting dance steps.
