An Old Fashioned Couple

Ballad

An old fashioned couple were seated
Alone by the silent fireside
Their thoughts wandered back to a wedding
A happy young groom and his bride

But now they are aged and wrinkled
On her finger the same wedding ring
They both are as happy as ever
And the old man continues to sing:

Refrain:
You gave me your love and took my name
For forty years of wedded life our love remained the same
We struggled hard together in this great world of strife
In sunshine and rain we were always the same
God bless you my darling wife

The years rolled along to an evening as the sun slowly sank in the west
The old man lost his wife and companion the one in this world he loved best
He buried her there neath the willows fresh flower each morning he'd bring
Now there's one vacant chair by the fireside this old man continues to sing

Refrain:
You gave me your love and took my name
For forty years of wedded life our love remained the same
We struggled hard together in this great world of strife
In sunshine and rain we were always the same
God bless you my darling wife
