Ballad

Twas early in the morning we went down
We got Pat- J.G.'s skiff
And we got two cases and a half
Just as we landed on the wharf
And if we took them to the store
We got two dollars more sir

Chorus:
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
Aboard of a vessel, aboard of a vessel
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
A-catchin the codfish wild sir

We wrote a letter right away
And sent it down without delay
We sent it down to Jamie Baird
To get two gallons 'O rum sir

Chorus:
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
Aboard of a vessel, aboard of a vessel
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
A-catchin the codfish wild sir

So Friday night as you may see
Two gallons o' rum it come to we
A jolly good time we 're going to have
A-coming in the mornin'

Chorus:
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
Aboard of a vessel, aboard of a vessel
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
A-catchin the codfish wild sir

So Saturday night as you may see
A bunch O' maidens come to we
A jolly good time we're going to have
A-corning in the morning

Chorus:
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
Aboard of a vessel, aboard of a vessel
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
A-catchin the codfish wild sir

So in and out some trouble arose
And everybody got their bows
And everyone they had their own
But Johnny Park had ne'er 'un

Chorus:
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
Aboard of a vessel, aboard of a vessel
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
A-catchin the codfish wild sir

Then Tom he said to Pat said he
What are you doin' along with she
She said to go along with me
She'll do the same this mornin'

Chorus:
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
Aboard of a vessel, aboard of a vessel
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
A-catchin the codfish wild sir

Then Mike and Pat got in a clinch
And ne'er a one of them would flinch
The minute the fight come to an end
The maiden she was gone sir

Chorus:
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
Aboard of a vessel, aboard of a vessel
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
A-catchin the codfish wild sir

So all young men take warning by this
And never go fighting o'er a lass
For if you so you'll cause a laugh
And you'll be left with ne'er un

Chorus:
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
Aboard of a vessel, aboard of a vessel
Much of a hand aboard of a vessel
A-catchin the codfish wild sir

Notes

History: Found in Newfoundland.

Text: Describes the activities of sailors ashore. They sell their catch, they have a good time Friday night then on Saturday night the singer is approached by lots of young girls. Two young men (Mike & Pat) get in a fight over a girl and when they are done the girl has left. The song ends with a warning to young men that they shouldn't fight over girls. Everyone will get a laugh at their expense and they'll come away empty-handed.
