Upon receipt of a written request, Facilities Engineering & Development will provide cost estimates to assist departments in budget preparation, project planning or facilities upgrade. Please complete a Project Request Form and submit via fax or internal mail. Also, note that work performed by Engineering & Development utilizes external contractors and the Public Tendering Act. Minor renovations and repairs should be directed to Work Control via a Service/Material Authorization Form (SMA) available by calling 864-7600 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
Preliminary information and order of magnitude estimates are provided at no cost to clients. The cost for more accurate estimates is fully recovered from the requestor. Two types of estimates are prepared: Budgetary and Detailed. Budget Estimates are based upon the scope of work and costing information for major work components. Its accuracy is considered to be +/-25%. Detailed estimates require that design and preliminary engineering be completed. Detailed estimates are considered to be +/-10% of final project cost.
Typically, budgetary estimates are used for fiscal planning while detailed estimates are reserved for projects for which funding is approved and construction is imminent. They are also performed just prior to tendering to ensure that the project funding and anticipated costs are in line.
Where significant mechanical or electrical systems are involved, external consultants may be required to provide estimating services. Client departments are advised of this requirement prior to engaging these services.
