The Intensive English Program (IEP) at Memorial University of Newfoundland is a multi-skill program for students preparing for full-time university studies conducted in English, or who wish to improve their English communication skills for business or professional purposes. The program is designed for students from the low-intermediate to advanced levels and who are 18 years or older.
Students may apply for provisional admission to Memorial at the same time as they apply for this program. Successful completion of the Intensive English Program together with an acceptable score on the test of English language proficiency given at the end of the program may allow students to finalize their admission to a university program at Memorial University.
The 25 hours per week program includes 15 hours of classes in academic reading, writing, and listening, and 10 hours of speaking and listening, including presentation skills.
In addition to the classroom component, students will take part in various social or cultural activities during the semester. The types of activities will vary based on the season. Previous semesters have included field trips to museums, curling (a popular winter game in Canada), and pumpkin carving.
1. have a low-intermediate level of English
2. be 18 years of age or older by the program starting date unless a guardian is living nearby
3. have a visitor permit (if intending to study for less than six months)
4. arrange for a Canadian student visa or study permit (if intending to study more than six months)
