Personal Profile

Dr. Bachmayer is an associate professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. His main research interests lie in the domain of marine robotics with a particular focus on autonomous marine vehicles. In particular he is interested in the design, dynamics, control and navigation of autonomous underwater gliders and unmanned surface vessels. A particular focus of his research activities is towards enabling long-term unmanned multi-vehicle operations in GPS denied areas, such as under the ice, and in harsh environments.

Dr. Bachmayer received his engineering degree in electrical engineering from the Technische Universität Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Germany in 1995. In 1995, he worked as a visiting researcher at the Deep Submergence Laboratory of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. He received the M.Sc. and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering from the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, in 1997 and 2000. From 2000 to 2003, he joined the Dynamical Control Systems Laboratory at Princeton University as an associate researcher. In 2003, he joined the National Research Council Canada Institute for Ocean Technology in St. John's as an associate research officer where he was working until march 2008, when his new appointment at Memorial University came into effect. He is the founder and director of the Autonomous Ocean Systems Laboratory (AOSL) at Memorial University.
