G.M. Story, W.J. Kirwin, and J.D.A. Widdowson, eds. (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1982; 625 pages; 2nd edition with Supplement, 1990, p. 631-770; Third Printing, 1999, with foreword by Rex Murphy, p. vii-xii)
The DNE is a historical dictionary based on evidence taken from printed sources and, in addition, on evidence of tape-recorded speech in the province. The editors, Story, Kirwin, and Widdowson, brought complementary skills to their editing duties as natives of St. John's, southern New England, and Yorkshire, England. After its great popular success in 1982 and widespread published reviews, it has continued in print to the present.
In 1999 the DNE was mounted on the internet by specialists in the Faculty of Arts, Memorial University, and it has been enormously successful.
