Education 4161 Lesson Planning (Grade 9 Algebra)
Goals/Objectives/Outcome:
To find patterns for multiplying binomials.
Topics to Review:
Multiplying negative sign outside the bracket, Distributive Property, Multiplying monomials.
Materials:
Chalkboard, Math text book, Algebra tiles.
Procedure (Including Assessment Strategies):
Examples: 3(x), -3x(6x), (6p)(4m), and -a(-4b)
Review distributive property a(b+c) = ab + ac
Examples: x(2x + 1) and 3x(y + 2z)
Expanding the distributive property: (a+b)(c+d) = a(c+d) + b(c+d) = ac+ad+bc+bd
Examples: (x+4)(x+3), (a-2)(a-3), (2x+1)(2x-3), and (x+5)(3x+1)
Multiply binomials using algebra tiles: (check using the distributive property)
Examples: (x+3)(x+2), (2x-1)(x+1), (x-1)(x+3), and (x-4)(x+2)
Introduce the FOIL method First Outside Inside Last
Examples: (x+3)(x+2) and (2x-1)(x+1)
