Three minute thesis comes to Memorial
For the first time, Memorial Univeristy is participating in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competiton.
The 3MT was developed at the Univeristy of Queensland and is a competition where graduate students describe the critical parts of their thesis within a three minute time limit, using only a single presentation slide.
The quality of the presentations is judged by a panel with no special background in the topic. The goal is to be able to highlight the importance of your thesis effectively to a non-scientist audience.
"The value of this skill cannot be overstated," said Dr. Len Zedel, associate dean of Science (research and graduate). "Whenever you talk to colleagues, the media or the public, you need to present your research position clearly and concisely. Participating in a 3MT competition will provide you with valuable practice in this important skill."
There will be two opportunities for Science students to compete - the Faculty of Science will hold a competition for Science students on Wednesday, Oct. 16. A first prize of $500 and a runner up prize of $250 will be given out at that time.
Additionally, the School of Graduate Studies is hosting a university-wide competition on Monday, Oct. 21. More information about their competition is available here.
