Field Schools

Field School

The department considers field work to be an essential part of undergraduate training. All students are required to attend at least one field school (EASC 2905) which is held immediately before the start of the semester of the student's second year. A second field school (EASC 3905) is available to students following the end of the examination period of the winter semester (note that this field school is not mandatory, but is a prerequisite for several other, higher level courses). EASC 3705 and EASC 4905 are stand-alone, fourth-year field schools based in western and central Newfoundland. These courses are optional, but highly recommended, for Earth Science majors. Many of the expenses related to these field schools are covered by the department and through industry sponsorship, but students are required to contribute a modest sum to help defray fixed costs.

Other field trips, not for academic credit, are held on a less regular basis, while several undergraduate courses include short one-day excursions to localities on the Avalon Peninsula.
