Career Counselling and Assessment

University students face many difficult decisions related to choosing majors and setting career goals. The Student Wellness and Counselling Centre offers a number of programs and career counselling services that help students learn more about themselves, their interests, personality, skills and helps students explore their options.

Career Planning Group

Purpose: The purpose of the Career Planning Group is to assist currently registered students in making education and career choices that are compatible with their interests, values, and abilities.

Activities: Exploration of students’ academic/vocational interests, values, and abilities; increased familiarity with the resources found in the Career Development and Experiential Learning Centre; and completion of the Strong Interest Inventory (a tool that aids in academic and career choices).

Process: The Career Planning group includes two possible sessions.

In the first session, students complete a self-assessment and receive a tour of the Career Development and Experiential Learning Centre.

The second session is for students who wish to complete the Strong Interest Inventory (SII) . These students make an appointment through the Student Wellness and Counselling Centre to complete the SII, which includes a $25 fee. They will then attend a second session designed to assist them in the interpretation of their results.

Assessments

The Strong Interest Inventory (SII) is a great starting point for career planning.

The SII surveys one's interest patterns and compares them to the interests of individuals in a variety of occupations. Materials used with the SII help students learn which majors at MUN fit their interests.

The inventory can be completed in approximately 30 minutes and requires a group interpretation session.
