How does copyright infringement occur?

Dealing with a work in ways that are reserved to the copyright holder (for example: copying, altering, translating, etc.) without the written permission of the copyright holder is infringement and is subject to both civil and criminal consequences under the Copyright Act. There are certain exceptions to infringement found in the Act such as fair dealing and the educational exemptions and these are further explained below.

It is your responsibility to avoid infringement under the Copyright Act. Memorial University is not responsible for any acts that infringe copyright.
