We congratulate Shelly Xianon Wu on passing her PhD defence with distinction on the 10th of February 2012. Well done, Shelly!
Shelly was kind enough to provide us with the following testimonial about her experience at MUN:
I truly believe that my experience at the Department of Computer Science is irreplaceable and crucial during my transition from a graduate student to an independent researcher. Under the guidance and support of my supervisor, Dr. Banzhaf, I learnt how to explore and develop new ideas; through the interactions with other faculty members and graduate students, on occasions such as classes, research forums, seminars, invited talks and other social events, I expanded my knowledge and understanding further on a wide range of cutting-edge research topics; by traveling to 6 prestigious international conferences, I improved my public communication skills and met great people who have given me new perspectives and insights on my research; by participating in an internship program, I gained valuable industry related working experience. This department also has awesome administration and technical support staff! They always make sure that all your paperwork is processed on time and your experiment environment is set up in a best way. Plus, Newfoundland is a very unique (e.g., unusual time zone, beautiful coastlines, and special culture) and fun (hiking, skiing, fishing, watching whales, puffins, and icebergs, and etc.) place to stay. I highly recommend this department to anyone who is interested in pursuing a higher degree (MCs or Ph.D) in computer science or computational science.
