Online CEQ Pilot

Fall 2012 Pilot Extension

In the Fall 2012 semester, the Centre for Institutional Analysis and Planning is continuing a pilot of an online version of the CEQ form on behalf of the Senate Committee on Course Evaluation.  This pilot follows from recommendations made in a review report that was approved by Senate in January 2012.  As per the procedure followed in the Spring 2012 semester, this final phase of the pilot online process will be open to all courses, including Distance Education courses, offered in the Fall 2012 semester.  Faculty members have the option of using the traditional paper based method, or moving to the online form for this semester. The default position is the traditional process and faculty members will have to opt in to using the online version.

If you are interested in participating in the pilot and having your course(s) evaluated with the online CEQ form, please notify your academic unit head by October 24, 2012

  • The CEQ adminstration period for the traditional in-class CEQ is November 19 to November 30 (the last day of classes).
  • The CEQ administration period for the online pilot CEQ is November 19 to December 4 (the day before exams begin).

Winter 2012 Pilot

On January 10, 2012, Senate approved the report Review of the Course Evaluation Questionnaire (CEQ), submitted by the Senate Committee on Course Evaluation (SCCE).

This report made several recommendations for the course evaluation process at Memorial, including the pilot of an online administration of the Course Evaluation Questionnaire in Winter 2012 and a modification to the questionnaire items.

For the Winter 2012 pilot, three units have agreed to take part: Grenfell campus (all Divisions), School of Music, and Faculty of Education. The pilot project will be evaluated following the Winter semester and from this the SCCE will determine the next steps in the process.

Highlights of the pilot online administration:

  • The academic units that have been previously identified as volunteer participants for the Winter 2012 pilot can utilize the online CEQ for their courses. These include: School of Music, Faculty of Education, and Grenfell campus (all Divisions).
  • For the pilot, instructors may elect to use the traditional paper form in lieu of the online form for their course evaluation. In these cases administration of the CEQ will follow the policies and procedures already in place for in-class administration. Instructors can inform their Administrative Head that they wish to opt out of the pilot project.
  • The online CEQ form will be made available to students through Student Self-Service on Banner.
  • Students will complete the online CEQ form on their own time as opposed to during class time as is currently the case with the paper form.
  • The CEQ form for the pilot will consist of 13 questions: some original questions have been modified, some original questions have been replaced by new questions, and four original questions have been retained. A list of revised questions being used in the pilot can be viewed here.
  • The administration period for the online CEQ for Winter 2012 will be March 23 to April 10, 2012, which is the same time period but a few days longer than the administration period for the in-class CEQ.
  • CEQ results for courses in the pilot academic units in Winter 2012 will not be included in the overall university aggregate statistics and will not be published on Student Self-Service.
