Where is Chisasibi?

Sunset in Chisasibi
Chisasibi is a Cree community located on the east coast of James Bay. It lies on the southern shore of La Grande River, approximately 10 km from where the river empties into James Bay. Chisasibi means "great river" in Cree (chisa=great, sibi=river). From the mid-20th century up to 1981, the community which now lives in Chisasibi lived on Fort George Island, a river island a little downstream from Chisasibi. Erosion caused by the James Bay Hyrdo-electric Project's diversion of upstream waterways forced the Cree to relocate. The population of Chisasibi is approximately 4,000, the majority of whom speak Cree as a first language. Despite being in the province of Quebec, for historical reasons, most Cree people in Chisasibi who speak a second language speak English. The Education Services of the Cree School Board offer Cree-medium education from Kindergarten to Grade 2, with either English or French as a Second Language offered beyond this.
