Campus Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)
On January 7, 2004, Computing and Communications began offering wireless network access to Memorial's students, faculty, and staff in strategic areas of the St. John's campus. The WLAN project, which started in September, 2003, implemented the management and security infrastructure necessary to support service to the entire campus and access points (the devices that form the inter-connect between the wired network and the wireless network) to distribute service to specific areas of campus. By the end of January, C&C had completed the installation of 58 access points in selected service areas across campus, covering approximately 35% of the surveyed buildings. Several other University units contributed funding to the project to immediately increase wireless service within their areas.
As of October 2008, Computing and Communications has responded to the increased demand and utilization of the Wireless infrastructure and has begun to expand and strengthen the current install base. This has included the re-surveying of key buildings, increasing the number of access points in several high traffic areas, and upgrading the wireless management system.
The primary intent of the WLAN is to provide mobility, ubiquitous access, and the accommodation of private computers on MUNet to facilitate workgroups, teaching, etc. It complements the wired network service by a level of flexibility not otherwise attainable. By installing an appropriate wireless network interface card and obtaining a wireless account, students, faculty, and staff can setup their laptops to work on campus in the current WLAN service areas.
