CANQUA awards

The WA Johnston medal

CANQUA's most meritorious award is the WA Johnston medal for professional excellence in Quaternary science, awarded at the biennial CANQUA meeting. The award is made by a committee headed by the Past President, based on nominations of CANQUA members.

WA Johnston

WA Johnston was an innovator in Quaternary studies in Canada who in his years with the Geological Survey of Canada developed many of the concepts of regional Quaternary studies used today.


Student prizes

CANQUA gives a number of student awards. The DN Proudfoot and Guy Lortie awards are given to the best student presentation and paper at the CANQUA biennial meeting. The awards commerate two Canadian Quaternarists who passed away in the prime of their lives after outstanding student and professional careers. Previous winners include:-

  • Rod Smith and Bianca Frechette (St. John's, 1995)
  • Duane Froese and Andrew Stumpf (Montreal, 1997)
  • Duane Froese/ Tim Johnsen (Proudfoot award, shared), and Joanne Livingston (Lortie); Whitehorse, 2001. Duane talked on "Mid-Pliocene Permafrost and the First Cordilleran Ice Sheet in Yukon Territory", and Tim's presentation was on "Glacial Lake Deadman, Southern Interior of British Columbia: Paleogeography and Paleoenvironment". Joanne's poster discussed "Reconstructing the Late Holocene (Last 3000 Years) Ice-Jam Flood History of the Middle Yukon River"
