Rare Plants of Newfoundland

In the field of plant conservation, MUN Botanical Garden is working with the Limestone Barrens Species-at-Risk Conservation and Recovery Team to secure long-term persistence of rare plants of the limestone barrens on the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland.  The Botanical Garden is responsible for the development of ex situ (off site - away from the plants natural habitat) protocols as well as restoration and reintroduction strategies for the COSEWIC listed endangered Braya longii, and Salix jejuna and threatened Braya fernaldii.  This work is in cooperation with Dr. Luise Hermanutz in MUN Biology and the Recovery Team.  Joni Kemp, a Master of Science student at Memorial University, is currently working on these ex situ conservation strategies.
