CURRICULUM LINKS TO EDUCATION PROGRAMS AT MUN BOTANICAL GARDEN

The education programs at Memorial University of Newfoundland Botanical Garden link various science curriculum objectives and outcomes as outlined by the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Education.

The education staff at MUN Botanical Garden is pleased to offer a wide variety of curriculum-based programs suitable for all levels, from Kindergarten to secondary.  All programs emphasize local content.  The Newfoundland environment is utilized as an outdoor classroom, where local plants and animals are incorporated into every presentation.  Environmental issues are also presented as they relate both to Newfoundland and Labrador and the world.

The following lists of curriculum objectives can be included in any education program booked with the Garden.  These programs can be modified to meet the specific needs of your students and relate to issues, topics and/or any special project relevant to your local area or school.  Garden staff is also happy to link your program to other subject areas such as language arts, social studies, or math.  The "Program" section  of this website contains a list of various programs that are popular with teachers across the province, as well as additional information on booking programs at the Garden.

A mandate of the education program at MUN Botanical Garden is to be both a learning and teaching resource for teachers and students in Newfoundland and Labrador.  Since 1971 we have offered school visit programs in the spring and fall.  In recent years, we have initiated a series of curriculum-based information units, intended for local teachers to use as a program supplement.   It is our hope to continue to expand the resources available to teachers.  Please contact education staff if we can help you enhance learning in your classroom.  Is there a subject area that you, as a teacher, would like to connect more closely to your local environment?  Is there a topic that you feel educators need more background information or available learning resources?  Please let us know.  We would be happy to develop a program for you.
