PlantWatch

PlantWatch Activity: Photos

Do you like taking pictures of flowers in your garden or on your daily walk? Your photos can help monitor climate change!

  1. Select a plant from the list of 13 selected for Newfoundland and Labrador (Find plants on the PlantWatch website or guide).
  2. Find the plant in your local area and record the location and environmental details.
  3. Mark your patch of plants with a tag.
  4. Take pictures of your plants! Try to watch them every day during bloom time. Take photos of “first bloom”, “mid-bloom” and “leaf out”. These will vary depending on which plant you choose (see the PlantWatch website or guide). If you are unsure of bloom time you can take a picture of the plant on each visit (before, during and after blooming).
  5. Record your observations by writing the dates the photos were taken for. Make sure you note the environmental information.
  6. Email your photos to Madonna Bishop (mbishop[at]mun.ca). Make sure you indicate the date that each photo was taken, the location of the plant and environmental details. You can also print the photos and write the information on the back and send them to:

Photo #1 of Sweetgale taken at MUN Botanical Garden (Mt. Scio Road, St. John’s, NL) on May 11th by Madonna Bishop. This photo indicates “first bloom”. The plant was in a sunny location on a flat area, the weather a week before flowering was average temperature and dry. The plant was found growing beside Oxen Pond.

Photo #2 of the same Sweetgale taken on May 16th. This photo indicates “mid bloom”. The location is the same but the weather a week before flowering was below average temperature with rain drizzle and fog.
