Of the 4,000 species of plants growing in Canada, about 800 are
non-native or alien.
Over 35 percent of plant species in Newfoundland and Labrador are
aliens. Of these
plants, a few have taken over natural habitats, reducing
biodiversity by changing species composition. Some plants disrupt natural
successional patterns, preventing disturbed areas from returning to
their natural state.
These rogue plants are called invasive
alien plants (IAP).
