Seniors' Day

Seniors are invited to visit MUN Botanical Garden and participate in our 14th Annual Seniors' Day at the Garden on June 26, 10 am - 3 pm. The Friends of the Garden (FOG), in conjunction with the Botanical Garden, and C.A.R.P. (Avalon Chapter) host this event every year.  Free admission, refreshments, tours and more.  Everyone is welcome!

The Friends of MUN Botanical Garden could not sponsor Seniors’ Day every year without the support and help of some very special organizations and people, including:

Canadian Association of Retired Persons (C.A.R.P.), Avalon Chapter
Investors Group Matching Gift Program
Food Security Network of Newfoundland and Labrador
St. John Ambulance
Purity Factories
Seniors Resource Centre of Newfoundland and Labrador
Dominion Stores, Blackmarsh Road
McDonalds Restaurant
Value Village
Sobey’s, Topsail Road

Special thanks to Parsons and Sons Transportation for their help with the transportation this year!

Since its launch in 2001, Seniors' Day has evolved into a very popular, well-attended and well-received event. The positive feedback from volunteers, staff, the community and participati
ng seniors has been tremendous and very rewarding.

Seniors’ Day was conceived by one of the Friend’s long-time members, the late Mr. Tom Sandland, who was also very actively involved with the Canadian Association of Retired Persons, Avalon Chapter.

Garden volunteers and staff are offering a variety of activities for seniors to enjoy including:

COMPLIMENTARY REFRESHMENTS
Seniors will be offered a selection of homemade goods, including tea buns, coffee, tea and sweets.

GARDEN TOURS
Tours will be on-going all day and may include: the Newfoundland heritage garden, the Friend's wildlife-friendly garden, cottage garden, alpine house, perennial border, medicinal garden, shade garden, peat and woodland beds, compost demonstration garden and vegetable gardens. Highlights will include the rock gardens and the rhododendron dell.

NATURE HIKES
Take a stroll with a guide to Oxen Pond to feed the ducks, visit a bog, go bird watching, or just admire the wild flowers along the trail.

“ASK THE GARDENER”
Gardening staff and volunteers will be on hand to answer gardening questions and provide helpful tips and advice.
