Friends of the Garden

Members of the Friends of the Garden (FOG) are individuals who support the botanical, horticultural and environmental objectives of the Memorial University Botanical Garden (the Garden).

Volunteers have assisted the Garden since its inception in 1971. The Friends officially formed in 1978 and in 1985 the organization incorporated and became a registered Canadian charity.  Its legal name is "Friends of MUN Botanical Garden Inc" but the group is affectionately known as "the Friends" or "FOG", or "Friends of the Garden".

As of April 1, 2017, and in support of the Garden’s strategic plan, FOG has limited its membership offering for new and renewing memberships to those interested in volunteering for events, Groups, tasks and activities organized by either FOG or the Garden. Individuals interested in supporting either the Garden or FOG without volunteering are encouraged to purchase one of the Garden’s new Season Passes. Click here for details.

VOLUNTEERING:

Individuals interested in volunteering can do so as part of a FOG Group (e.g. Board, Horticultural, Carpentry) or for events, tasks and activities organized by either FOG (e.g. Spring Clean-up of the Garden’s paths; Mt. Scio Road side clean-up) or the Garden (e.g. Field Centre’s front desk, Gift Shop or Library). Those who enjoy walking in nature might be interested in volunteering for the Garden’s Trail Patrol while those who like to interact with the public will enjoy helping with annual events such as Seniors' Day, Mystery Garden Tour and/or the Merry & Bright Light Festival.

FOG’s Membership Year is from April 1st to March 31st and individuals interested in volunteering occasionally can join or renew as a Supportive Friend while those able to commit to a minimum of 30 volunteer hours in any membership year can join or renew as either an Active Friend or an Active Student Friend (MUN students only).
