SEPTEMBER 2009

Gardening Workshop #4: Perennials for Fall
Date: Wednesday, September 16, 7 – 9 p.m.
Instructor: Todd Boland, Research Horticulturist
Fee: $22.13 + HST = $25 (Pre-registration is required)
Description: Newfoundland has a relatively short growing season with generally poor springs. However, our fall season is often quite pleasant and long. There are many plants that naturally bloom in September through to early November that can take advantage of our mild falls and help extend the garden season. This workshop will introduce you to the diversity of fall-blooming plants that are suitable for our region.

OCTOBER 2009

Gardening Workshop #5: Putting Your Garden to Bed
Date: Saturday, October 17, 10 a.m. - noon
Instructor: Carl White, Head Gardener
Fee: $22.13 + HST = $25 (Pre-registration is required)
Description: Several fall gardening topics will be demonstrated in this workshop - everything you need to know to get your garden ready for winter. Most demonstrations will take place in the flower gardens so please be prepared to go outside. Topics will include: winter protection, preparing flower beds for winter, dismantling summer planters, enhancing soil, etc.

Be sure to drop by MUN Botanical Garden during International Compost Awareness Week. Admission to the Garden will be free. View compost displays, the compost demonstration garden, and the indoor worm bin (vermicomposter). Free composting information will be available in our field centre.

Gardening Workshop #1: Elementary Plant Propagation
Date: Thursday, May 7, 6:30- 8:30 p.m.
Instructor: Tim Walsh, Nursery Manager
Fee: $22.13 + HST = $25 (Pre-registration is required)
Description: Join Tim in the classroom and in the flower gardens to explore tried-and-true methods of producing new plants from seed, cuttings and division. We’ll then follow it up with a visit to the Botanical Garden nursery for a behind the scenes look at our production facility. In just two hours you will walk away equipped with the valuable skills necessary to propagate all your favorite plants (plus your neighbours’ and friends’ plants!).


Newfoundland Ecology Series #1: Life without Flowers
Date: Wednesday, May 27, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Instructor: Dr. Wilf Nicholls, Garden Director
Fee: $22.13 + HST = $25 (Pre-registration is required)
Description: "Life without Flowers" is a trip through the wonderful world of mosses, liverworts, ferns and fern allies. Our province has scores of spore-producing green plants. We'll investigate their form, reproduction, evolution both in the classroom and along the trails. Please be prepared to go outside. In the event of inclement weather, an indoor presentation will be provided.

Gardening Workshop #2: The 3 B’s of Container Gardening – (Boxes, Barrels and Baskets)

Date: Thursday, June 4, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Instructor: Tim Walsh, Nursery Manager
Fee: $22.13 + HST = $25 (Pre-registration is required)
Description: Growing plants in containers has surely gained popularity over the years. Let Tim take you through the necessary steps in producing a container that’s sure to turn heads. We’ll cover such topics as container selection, soil type, plants, placement and maintenance. Don’t let a lack of garden space leave you with a lack of color this summer.


Newfoundland Ecology Series #2: Trees and Shrubs of Bowring Park
Date: Wednesday, June 24, 7 - 9 p.m.
Instructor: Todd Boland, Research Horticulturist
Fee: $22.13 + HST = $25 (Pre-registration is required)
Description: Few places in St. John’s offer people exposure to as wide a variety of trees and shrubs as Bowring Park. Several of the woody plants here are virtually unknown to local gardeners. Join Todd on a stroll through the Park as he points out the most interesting of the Park’s woody plant collection.

Newfoundland Ecology Series #3: Avalon Shrubs and Trees
Date: Saturday, July 4, 9 a.m. - noon
Instructor: Dr. Wilf Nicholls, Garden Director
Fee: $26.55 + HST = $30 (Pre-registration is required)
Description: "Avalon Shrubs and Trees" will focus on our native woody plant species. In the classroom and along the trails we'll give you tips on correctly identifying our local flora. We'll also look at some native shrubs and trees for your garden.

Gardening Workshop #3: Gardening with Hosta
Date: Wednesday, July 8, 7 – 9 p.m.
Instructor: Todd Boland, Research Horticulturist
Fee: $22.13 + HST = $25 (Pre-registration is required)
Description: Come learn about the fascinating diversity of the genus Hosta. When it comes to perennials grown for foliage, few can compete with hosta. They are suitable from full shade to full sun. Size can range from a few inches to several feet. There is hardly any place in a garden where a hosta can’t be used. This workshop will introduce you to the variation that exists among the hosta, along with a stroll in the Garden to see our significant hosta collection.

AUGUST 2009

Newfoundland Ecology Series #4: Edible Plant Hike
Date: Sunday, August 23, 2 – 4 p.m.
Instructor: Todd Boland, Research Horticulturist
Fee: $22.13 + HST = $25 (Pre-registration is required)
Description: Dandelion stew? Dogberry jelly? Join Todd Boland for a walk in a boreal forest, and discover the many hidden culinary treasures. Find out about the many uses of cattails and why the best way to get rid of some weeds is to eat them. In the event of inclement weather, Todd will do an indoor presentation.

Friends of the Garden:
Registration for members of the Friends of the Garden will commence on Monday, April 13, 2009. Early registration is offered to members of the Friends of the Garden only. We recommend members of FOG to register before the public registration date.
