Undergraduate Awards & Scholarships
The following is a list of many of the scholarships/awards available to students either majoring in Biology or in the Faculty of Science.
Scholarship candidates must have achieved scholarship standing ie. 75% average, at the end of two out of the last three semesters in the previous scholarship year and the successful completion of not less than 30 credit hours in those two semesters.

Awards Specifically for Biology/Biological Science
Note: Additional stipulations for an award are may apply.
Bennett/Khan Bursary in Biology. Value $995. Awarded annually to a full time student beyond second year who is majoring in Biology with a particular reference to parasitology or another branch of invertebrate zoology.
The Bruton Scholarship. Value $947. Awarded to a student majoring in Biology whose special interest is in the field of plant biology.
The Dr. George Moskovits Award. Value $220. The award will be made to a full-time senior student who has shown outstanding performance in the field of cell biology/microbiology.
The Newfoundland Gardening Scholarship. Value $1,340. Awarded to a student graduating in Biology and intending to pursue a career in plant biology. If such a candidate is not available, it will be awarded to a second year Biology student going on to study horticulture.
The NLOA Angus Wentzell Memorial Scholarship. Value $333. Awarded to a student in a science program in at least third year of the program. The recipient must plan to pursue an undergraduate academic program leading to a career in inland fisheries, wildlife management, wildlife biology, or a related field.
The Lee Wulff Scholarship. Value $1,500. Awarded to a third year Biology major wishing to pursue further studies in biological Sciences, with emphasis on conservation and environment. The award will be made on the basis of academic excellence in biological sciences and a demonstrated interest in conservation and the environment. (Recommendation from Dean of Science).
Awards Available to All in Science
Note - Recommendation from Dean of Science required
The Churchill Falls (Labrador) Corporation Limited Science Scholarship. Value ~$3,000 each. Awarded to second year student or beyond entering the Faculty of Science. All else being equal, preference will be given to students from Labrador.
The LGL Limited Scholarship in Marine Science. Value ~$3,000. Graduate or Undergraduate. Awarded to a student in the Faculty of Science who is following a program of studies related to Marine Science. The successful candidate will be either a fourth year undergraduate student doing an honours program or a graduate student. Wherever possible preference will be given to a student from a fishing family, but other students will be considered.
General Rick Hillier Scholarship in Science and Leadership.Value~ $3,400. Undergraduate student who demonstrated leadership in their activities, either on or off campus and have graduated from a high school in rural Newfoundland and Labrador. Preference will also be given to students who are members of military families, or who are past or present members of the military. Please include a self-identifying statement listing the relevant information.
Toronto Alumni Scholarship. Value ~$4,000. Awarded annually to an undergraduate student, beyond first year, in any field of study who is a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador, who demonstrates both academic excellence and leadership qualities.
The following are awarded to full-time undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science based on scholarship standing and recommendation of the Dean of Science:
The Pardy Family Scholarship. Value $2,180.
The Faculty of Science Opportunity Fund Scholarship. Value ~$1,000
Williams Science Scholarship. Value $1,350.
The William Kenneth Macleod Scholarship. Value ~$1,300. Awarded annually to a Newfoundland and Labrador undergraduate student who has a recognized disability( physical or learning).Available via application process.
Dermot O’Reilly Legacy Award. Value ~$1,500. Awarded annually to a part-time or full-time student based on academic standing, established support of traditional music, oral tradition or dance amongst Newfoundlanders and Labradorians made evident, either through actions or creative undertakings, contributions to the province by demonstrating leadership and creativity in the tradition-bearer community. Available via application process.
University Medal for Academic Excellence. Based on highest academic standing in Biology. (Recommendation from Head of Biology to Scholarship Office.)
The Birks Medal. The Birks Medal is provided by Henry Birks and Sons (Maritime) Limited for awarding to the student of the graduating class who has shown the most leadership in student affairs during his or her university years. (Recommendations from Head of Biology to Scholarship Office. CV or outline of the student’s involvement must be included).
The Captain Robert A. Bartlett Award. Value based on interest of a Trust Fund in his name. The award will be based primarily on academic excellence. Consideration may also be given to the demonstration of the spirit of scientific exploration (Recommendation of the President. Biology recommends to the Dean of Science, who makes recommendation to the Scholarship Office).
