Identifying Open Reading Frames (ORFs) in dsDNA

    The 44bp example above is taken from the complete mitochondrial DNA sequence of an Atlantic Cod. One or more stop codons (*) occur in five of the six reading frames (all except the second frame in the lower strand, read 5'3'). This open reading frame (... F T G A L I L M I A H G L A ....) is part of the code for a subunit protein of the enzyme cytochrome oxidase  .

     Important note: to  translate the above example, you must use the mitochondrial DNA code, which  has different stop codons from the 'universal' code
