Dusky Langur (Trachypithecus
obscurus)
The Dusky Langur is one of a
number of leaf-eating colobine monkeys with a modified Lysozyme
enzyme that enables it to break down bacteria in a
foregut fermentation similar to that of ungulates. The amino
acid structure of the monkey Lysozyme has converged strongly
on that of a cow, and is dissimilar from other colobines, an
excellent example of convergent evolution for a
similar function.
