Classification of genes in the fruit fly,  Drosophila melanogaster


    The number of genes is estimated by identification of open reading frames (ORFs) and expressed sequence tags (ESTs). Genes are classified (annotated) by comparison with known protein sequences from other organisms. In this 2000 catalog, of 11,192 genes classified in Drosophila, 22% are enzymes,12% are involved with regulation of nucleic acid function, and 68% have as yet unknown functions.
