Griffith's Transformation Experiment

A mixture of heated-killed virulent bacteria and avirulent bacteria regenerated live virulent bacteria. The avirulent bacteria had been transformed by the presence of something in the heated-killed bacteria: further, this something was passed on to subsequent generations. The nature of the transforming substance was unknown.
