Flowering times in Sour cherry and Hawthorn are distinct; apple flowering time is intermediate. The disjunction prevents Rhagoletis fruit flies parasitic on hawthorns from infesting sympatric sour cherry orchards, except where apple trees are present as an intermediate host.
