Biology 4900/7931 - Research Methods in Genetic Biotechnology

Dates: 26 April - 14 May 2010

Lecture Room: SN-2101

Laboratory: SN-3119

Required: Bound lab notebook, lab coat, sensible shoes; glasses recommended

Overview

The methods of genetic biotechnology are becoming increasingly important to researchers in diverse areas of biology. The current course will provide an analytical and theoretical introduction to the methodologies and a basis for Honours and graduate students to use and apply them in their own research.

This is a three-week intensive hands-on course in DNA technology including nucleic acid extraction and analysis, PCR, cloning and library construction, sequencing, data analysis and bioinformatics, and project design. To apply these techniques within a research framework, students will investigate novel aspects of the molecular genetics and genomics of endangered Newfoundland fish species.
