1000-band human karyotype banding pattern

Giemsa staining of denatured chromosomes reveals characteristic banding patterns that can be used to identify individual chromosomes. Chromosomes are aligned at their centromeres. The scale indicates the intensity of banding. Cross-hatched areas on Chromosomes 1, 9, 16, and Y are heterochromatic regions that are genetically inactive.
