Roots fibrous. Plants rhizomatous; rhizomes elongate; with conspicuous long horizontal stems; rhizomes 25–70 mm wide. Leaves arising singly from creeping rhizomes. Petioles 50–200 cm long; convex to flat in cross-section (adaxially flattened with median ridge, winged along margin); glabrous. Leaves alternate. Leaves 7–35 cm long; 5–25 cm wide. Leaves green (sometimes purple-tinged beneath). Blades adaxial surface highly glossy. Blades adaxial surface glabrous. Blades abaxial surface glabrous. Leaf apices obtuse; blades ovate, or oblong; bases sagittate (sinus 1/3 to 1/2 length of midrib). Blades flat.

Flowering stems without leaves; glabrous. Flowering stem 50–200 cm long. Flowers solitary; inflorescence axillary. Flowers large, more than 15 mm in diameter or length; borne on a stalk. Calyx sepals 6 (mostly); fused; calyx, sepals or tepals green to yellow above, usually red toward base below. Petals numerous, stamen or scale-like; free; yellow. Petals oblong and thick; shorter than the calyx. Stamens numerous; stamen filaments terete. Anthers yellow; ellipsoid; 3–9 mm long (longer than filaments). Nectaries in bisexual flowers present. Carpels syncarpous; 7–28; ovary hypogynous. Ovaries ovate. Style absent. Stigmas per style 1; stigmatic disk green, 8–20 mm in diameter. Placentation laminar. Peduncle length in fruit 3 mm long. Seeds 2.5–5 mm long.

Chromosome information. 2n = 34; FNA.

Distribution. Northern hemisphere distribution: North American. North American phytogeography: boreal. Abundance in the province: locally abundant. Northern hemisphere: Newfoundland, Labrador, St. Pierre and Miquelon, Canada, United States. Canada: Nfld., Lab., N.S., P.E.I., N.B., Que., Ont., Man., Sask., Alta., B.C., Yukon, N.W.T. (Mackenzie). USA: New England, North Midwest States, Montana. Provincial distribution: Newfoundland, or Labrador; Newfoundland distribution: throughout; Labrador distribution: western, or southern, or central.

Ecology and habitat. Aquatic.
