Dr. Philip Davis is the new Acting Head of the department, replacing Dr. Martin Mulligan who finished his terms as head and returned to duties as a regular faculty member on December 31, 2010.

September 28, 2010 - Congratulations to Joy Zhong
From Dr. Mulligan - I am pleased to tell you that Joy Zhong, a student in Dr. Shahidi's laboratory, defended her PhD thesis with distinction earlier today. Please join me in congratulating her and in wishing her well for the future.
September 17, 2010 - New Undergraduate Bursary for Department
Dr. Mulligan today signed the paperwork establishing the Douglas and Beatrice Hall Biochemistry Bursary. This award has been funded entirely (to date) from current and recently left employees. The President has to sign the documents too, and then the process can begin to award this bursary, hopefully this Fall. The winner will be a major in the third year of one of our undergraduate programs.
Funds pledged to date total over $35,000, much of it in the form of salary pledges for a five-year period ending in 2015.
. We decided to have a "End of Summer" theme to bring summer to an end and to start a great new semester. I hope you all can make it to meet the new society and other students.

It gives us great pleasure to advise everyone that Dr Robert Brown has accepted a faculty position in Metabolic Biochemistry, starting September 20, 2010.
Our Graduate Students have come together in a new initiative and formed an official Society under the auspices of the Graduate Students Union:
The BIOCHEMISTRY GRADUATE SOCIETY
The Society's goal is to foster closer working relationships and a collegial spirit among our graduate students. They plan to hold events for graduate students in the coming months to help them do just that.

Our department won the Campus Food Bank's 12 Days of Giving most points earned award, which means we were able to collect the most food among the deparments and offices on campus who were collecting. This is our third year winning, so we should be proud of ourselves for being able to gather such a tremendous amount of food each time.

On Tuesday May 18th, PhD student Zhuliang Tan received the Fellow of the School of Graduate Studies Award. He is also the recipient of a Biotechnology Award from the American Oil Chemists Society at their meeting this week.
PhD student Ying (Joy) Zhong is the recipient of an Honor Student Award, also from the American Oil Chemists Society. In March of this year, she received a second place award at the American Chemical Society meeting for her work.
There will be a departmental coffee May 13 at 3pm in the Feltham Room, to welcome new professor Dr. S. Christian aboard.

Today is Dr. Sherri Christian's first day with the department so I would like to extend to her an official welcome to the Dept of Biochemistry. (Dr. Christian was appointed as Assistant Professor as of May 1, 2010)

2009 NEWS AND EVENTS
The General Office and other departmental offices will be closed from 10 am Thursday, December 24th until 8:30 am Tuesday, January 5th. All deferred and supplementary exam applications should be made as soon as possible starting with our re-opening time. Students are asked to apply for these exams by Wednesday, January 6th. Students will be given a minimum of 48 hours notice for writing any such exam. All exams will be written during the first week of classes.
Kindness Friday - October 30, 2009
As part of the Faculty of Science initiative for Kindness Friday, we are collecting for the Campus Food Bank. Donation boxes will be in the Feltham Room from October 19 - 30. A list of items wanted is with the above Science link. Cash will also be accepted, please see the General Office to arrange that.
Also for Kindness Friday, some of our Biochemistry staff have grouped together to make Halloween treat bags for our students. They will be available in the General Office on Friday.
There will be a departmental coffee Friday, October 30, at 10am in the Feltham Room. It's potluck, each lab or office is asked to bring something. Costumes are encouraged!
Biochemistry Society Clothing
Our student society have a clothing sale in progress, with order forms due by October 30. There are a variety of items you can choose from, with Biochemistry or MUN logos on them. They have order forms in their room, SN4001.
News from the Head November 20th: I am pleased to advise members of the department that Tamara Smith, a student with Dr. McGowan, passed her oral defence of PhD thesis this morning. Please join me in congratulating Tamara on her achievement and in wishing her well with her future career.
Dr. John Robinson's recent run for the Campus Food Bank netted $120 from the department (and a few others). Thanks to him for donating his efforts, and to all who contributed.
We raised $76 for the Alzheimer Society at our October 9th coffee break. Thanks to all who donated.

The Department of Biochemistry congratulates Dr. John Brosnan on his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

The Department congratulates Dr. Fereidoon Shahidi on the establishment of “The Fereidoon Shahidi Fellowship,” by the International Society for Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods in recognition of his contributions to this field.
The Fellowship, worth US$1,500 will be awarded annually to a graduate student with an outstanding record in both course work and research performance. You can find out how to apply at the ISNFF site.
