Before you read on, here are some facts about St. John's:
- St. John's, the oldest city in North America, is home to approximately 180,000 people in the metropolitan area.
- The geographic area of the St. John's metropolitan region is 850 sq km.
- The average temperature ranges from 0 deg Celsius (in winter) to 20-23 deg Celsius (in summer).
- Newfoundland Standard Time is approximately 0.5 hours ahead of Atlantic Standard Time.
Tips to Get You Started
- It is approximately a 10 minute drive from St. John’s International Airport to campus. The airport taxi offers set rates from the airport to different areas in the city for $25 or less. If you are travelling outside one of these areas, you are charged using the meter rate. Check out www.citywidetaxi.ca/airport.html for more information.
- Churchill Square (a local shopping area) is only a five minute walk from the university. In “the Square” you will find a grocery store, a drug store, a bank, restaurants, cafés, souvenir shops, hair salons and many other great shops.
- Downtown St. John’s is within walking distance from Memorial. It takes approximately 30 minutes to walk from campus to downtown. Make sure to walk along the historic Water and Duckworth Streets and view Downtown’s many interesting sights.
- First-year students can enjoy MUN Sea Hawks varsity games for FREE, just by showing their MUN ID.
