Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do I need a passport?

4. Do I need to know some German?
English is spoken widely in the Western part of Germany, especially in bigger cities, although older people are less likely to know enough English to communicate with ease. As everywhere people do appreciate your efforts in at least trying the language spoken in the country.
5. How can I call home? Should I buy phone cards or a special chip for my cell phone?
Cell phones in Germany are -- oddly enough -- called "Handys" and operate on a different system than North American cell phones. If you are coming from North America you will probably have a CDMA phone which will not work. For a GSM phone, you need to check whether your phone is unlocked as some phones are network specific. If your phone isn't locked, you just need a new SIM card. When you want to call a number in Canada from a pay phone you need to dial 001 prior to the area code. You can insert a local calling card or change in a phone booth. You can use international calling cards as well.
6. What's the Internet situation like?
Hotels usually have internet access at least in their lobby. Also many cafés offer free WIFI. In bigger towns you will also have a choice of internet cafés.
7. What are business hours like in Germany? Are there any 24-hour stores? What time do things close? Are stores and businesses open on Sundays?
Generally shops are allowed to be open Monday -Saturday from 9.30 (9:30 a.m.) to 20.00 (8 p.m.). Shops are closed on Sundays.
8. What will the weather be like in May? What sort of clothes should I bring?
Maximum temperatures in the past have been around 19°C, minimum temperatures around 8°C. May 2008 was very warm, more like summer, so it really depends on the weather pattern in Europe. Bring an umbrella and be prepared to have summer temperatures or cool weather.
9. Where are the Canadian embassies/ consulates abroad?
Visit the country reports on Foreign Affairs Canada website at www.voyage.gc.ca
10. Can I purchase trip insurance?
Flight cancellation insurance (St. John's return) is provided with the cost of your ticket. You should talk to your travel agent and credit card carrier for other forms of insurance coverage that may be available to you.
11. Do I need to purchase travel health insurance?
You are only partially covered by the Newfoundland and Labrador provincial medical coverage. Talk with your current insurance company to ensure you have proper insurance abroad. People from outside Newfoundland and Labrador should check their provincial medical coverage to see what is included.
12. Should I visit with my doctor before I go?
It is always a good idea to visit with your doctor before you travel to ensure that you are in good health. Inform them about where you are going and how long you will be away, and make sure you have enough of any prescription you may be taking with you for your time abroad.
13. Do I need to go to the bank before I travel?
It is always a good idea to visit with your bank before you leave. They can provide you with currency for traveling, and discuss options for accessing your funds while abroad. In many countries in Europe, it is easier for Canadians to access money through a chequing account instead of a savings account. You should ask your bank for more information.
14. Travel Points?
We recommend that you not use points to travel on this course. You may end up with a different flight schedule that may result in significant extra ground transportation charges being incurred.
15. Credit Cards
If you plan to use your credit card overseas, contact your bank and credit card company prior to traveling. Both are becoming increasingly more vigilant about "unusual" transactions.
16. What is the voltage / electrical currency in Germany?
Voltage for electrical appliances in Germany is 220 / 240 V AC. You should check your appliances before you leave. It is recommended to have a voltage converter.
