Aboriginal Resource Office

The Aboriginal Resource Office (ARO) is responsible for providing support services to Aboriginal students. The office also works to advocate and educate the general university population regarding inclusion of our unique Aboriginal peoples found within our province.

Reporting to the Special Advisor to the President on Aboriginal Affairs, the Manager of the ARO oversees the development of programs, resources and supports to empower Aboriginal Students to thrive at Memorial University.

The Aboriginal Student Success Coordinator is entrusted to assist Aboriginal students in adapting to an academic and urban environment. The ARO strives to offer programs and services to create a welcoming community for all Aboriginal students. The ARO also provides information to potential students on accessing funding through a wide variety of Aboriginal groups, scholarships and other potential sources of funding.

The Aboriginal Cultural Education Coordinator develops and implements educational tools and strategies to educate Memorial Univeristy students, staff and faculty about Aboriginal Peoples, histories and culture. The Coordinator is available to faculty for help with syllabus development and as a guest lecturer.

In the Aboriginal Student Lounge (UC 4005) students have access to a student lounge, two computers, photocopier, telephone for local calls, used textbooks and other resources. The common student area is a place for students to relax in a peaceful environment with other Aboriginal students who share similar backgrounds.

The Aboriginal Resource Office has organized Aboriginal Orientation for new students over the last number of years, providing an introduction to the university environment that both highlights the resources focusing on Aboriginal student needs, as well as integration into mainstream student orientation.
