The Department of Archaeology’s 2014 field school will take place at the O’Brien Farm, located within C.A. Pippy Park and bordering Memorial University’s Botanical Gardens.

First settled by John O’Brien in 1818, the lands were continuously farmed by four generations of the O’Brien family. The site is representative of the early Irish settlement of St. John’s and is an important part of this province’s agricultural history.

This year’s field school, in co-operation with the O’Brien Farm Foundation, will focus on surveying, locating, and excavating the remains of the early dwellings built by John O’Brien and members of his family.
In order to participate see the following course outlines:

• ARCH 3583 Archaeology Field School Orientation, on campus, Spring Term 2014, (May-June). This course is a prerequisite for taking the field school.

• ARCH 3585-3586 Archaeology Field School, O’Brien Farm, Summer Term 2014 (July-August).

Information sessions are being held by Dr. James Lyttleton on the forthcoming MUN Archaeology Field School. There will be two sessions:

• Friday 14 March, 10:00-11:00am, QC-2003

• Friday 21 March, 10:00-11:00am, QC-2003

These are being organized so that prospective participants will know the basic structure of the field school, how to register for the classes, and what other additional costs will be on top of the tuition fees.
