Aatif Baskanderi, B.Eng.'08, MTM'15
Aatif grew up in Clarenville, NL and has spent time living across Canada and overseas, including Alberta, Ontario, British Columbia, England and Sierra Leone. Aatif holds a Bachelor of Engineering – Electrical (2008) and Master of Technology Management (2015) from Memorial University, as well as a MSc Social Policy & Development (2011) from the London School of Economics & Political Science. Aatif currently works as a Commercialization Manager at Innovate Calgary in Alberta, where he focuses on getting new energy technologies and business models successfully to market. Prior to this, he led the United Kingdom Science & Innovation Network for the Prairies based at the British Consulate-General Calgary. Throughout his education and career, he has worked in high tech (Blackberry, Nuance), natural resources (IOCC, Imperial Oil, North Atlantic Refinery, Irving Pulp & Paper), and policy (Council of Canadian Academies). He also continues to be a passionate volunteer for 10+ years with Engineers Without Borders Canada and other charities primarily focusing on systems thinking and social innovation. Aatif’s travels and experiences have served to make him a prouder Newfoundlander. The appreciation from people around the world for Newfoundland and Labrador becomes apparent as soon as they connect to it. Aatif’s goal for Memorial University is to position Newfoundland and Labrador as a unique global entity - where people can get a fantastic and affordable education and bridge connections to the world to solve local, regional and global problems through leveraging a strong sense of Newfoundland pride in ingenuity, respect, and diversity.
