Alciato's Book of EmblemsEmblem 191 On wifely fidelity Behold a young woman, who joins right hands with a man; behold how she sits and how a dog plays at her feet. This is the image of fidelity: if the passion of Venus fosters this fidelity, on her left there will be a branch aptly bearing apples. Indeed these are the fruits of Venus. Thus the daughter of Scoeneus conquered Hippomenes; thus Galatea sought her husband.
