Alciato Emblem 64: Source in Greek Anthology 9.47
(trans Paton, III, 27)
Anonymous On a Goat that Suckled a She-Wolf
It is not by my own will that I suckle the wolf at my own breast,
but the shepherd's folly compels me to do it. Reared by me he
will become a beast of prey to attack me. Gratitude cannot change
nature.
