Commentary on Emblem 51

An epigram with a source in Greek Anthology 7.71. Archilochus (8th-7th century BCE) was known in Antiquity as a satirist (in Greek Anthology 7.69 Julianus, Prefect of Egypt, writes "Archilochus is dead. Beware the acrid iambic wrath engendered by his bitter mouth.")

The emblem first appeared in the second collection of 1546 at 37r, unillustrated.
