New Year's Introduction to Aikido

This January we will have a four-class Introduction to Aikido. It will introduce the foundations of Aikido including throws, locks, controls, pins, and break falls as well as the more fundamental principles of posture, distance, timing, movement and harmonization.

This is designed for beginners. Experience with Aikido or any other martial art is neither expected nor necessary. All are welcome and you do not have to be a MUN student!

Registration and the first class will be on Tuesday, January 10. Registration will start at 7:15pm and then class will begin at 7:30pm. The cost is $40 and if you decide to continue with the club as a member this money will be discounted from your full membership cost. Payments can be made at the dojo by cash or cheque (made out to MUN Aikido) or by email transfer.
Please note: anyone under 18 will require a parental signature on their registration form.

Intro classes will occur on (this replaces the regular schedule on these dates):
• Tuesday, January 10 – 7:15 - 8:30 p.m. (Registration and first class).
• Thursday, January 12 – 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.
• Tuesday, January 17 – 7:30 - 8:30 p.m.
• Thursday, January 19 – 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.

These four classes are intended to be taken in sequence and will each focus on different aspects of Aikido, so we encourage you to attend all four so as not to miss anything.

All classes will take place at our dojo in the St. John’s Martial Arts Centre 21 Mews Place (see
Practical Info for map).

For planning purposes it would be useful for us to know how many people to expect, so please email
munaikido@gmail.com or respond on our Facebook page if you are planning to attend.

CAF Fall Seminar

Ivan and Antonina attended the CAF Fall Seminar with Osawa Shihan from Oct 28-30 in Montreal. You probably can't find them in this group picture. Thanks to Agatsu Aikikai for organizing this great seminar.

Kid's Classes!

Starting this Fall, MUN Aikido will offer classes for children age 9-13. The chief instructor will be Ivan Booth (4th degree black belt) who has more than 30 years of experience practicing and teaching aikido including teaching children’s classes in both Newfoundland and Ontario. He will be assisted by other experienced members of the MUN Aikido club.

Classes will be on Thursdays from 4:30-5:30pm at the St. John’s Martial Arts Centre (21 Mew’s Place). They start on September 15 and in this initial offering registration will be limited to twelve children. You can reserve a place for your child from our Eventbrite page.

Children should come to Aikido classes wearing comfortable clothing such as track pants and a long-sleeved shirt (or a karate or judo gi, if they have one), with long hair tied back and no jewellery. The cost for the September-December session will be $120. Payments can be made by cash, cheque (made out to MUN Aikido) at the dojo or through Paypal. Also please print and fill-out out the registration form and bring it to the first class.

MUN Aikido was founded almost 40 years ago and is a non-profit club. We are affiliated through the Canadian Aikido Federation to the Aikikai Foundation in Tokyo, Japan.
