Undeclared Students Beyond First Year

The Academic Advising Centre can offer academic advice and resources to any student who is:

  • as of yet undeclared in a program
  • unsure of what degree program to study
  • applied or intending to apply to a program but not yet accepted
  • unsure of application process and/or course requirements for intended program
  • considering several programs and not yet decided on which way to go

If you have any questions before declaring or applying to your intended program about the program itself or course selection, you can set up an appointment with an Academic Advisor or drop by the Academic Advising Centre, SN-4053.

To declare most majors and minors from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, email reghelp@mun.ca to make your choice official. There are some exceptions which require signatures on a declaration form or have a competitive application process.

To declare a major or minor from the Faculty of Science, the signature of the department head is usually required on the declaration form. There are three exceptions which have competitive application processes and they are Biology, Biochemistry and Psychology.

If you are planning to apply to a competitive entry degree program, check the application deadlines to make sure yours is submitted before that date.


 

Information Sessions

All students are welcome to attend the academic information sessions below. Each session will be an opportunity to discuss admission requirements, program regulations and potential changes to programs. Information sessions will be held in the Science Building, SN-4083 on Wednesdays at 1:00-1:50 unless otherwise stated.

  • Nov. 1 - Nursing
  • Nov. 8 - Education
  • Nov. 15 - Human Kinetics and Recreation (HKR)
  • Nov. 22 - Social Work
  • Nov. 29 - Science

Registration for Winter 2018

Registration times for Winter semester courses have been released and can be found under the Registration tab in Self Service. Course offerings are listed in Self Service. Some questions about the registration process may be answered through the Registrar's Office Registration Information. Other questions about course or program requirements can be answered by making an appointment for academic advice or dropping by the AAC, SN-4053.

Some (not all) reserves are scheduled to lifted on November 16th. If there are any seats available in those sections then, waitlisted students may automatically be shifted in. If there are still seats available in those courses after that, November 17th is a good day to check and see if you can get a seat in a course that is no longer reserved.

Waitlists will be deactivated on December 27th and the system will be unavailable on December 28th.


 

Important Dates for Fall 2017

The University Diary lists all relevant dates for the academic year. Below is a list of some important dates for the remainder of this semester.

  • Monday, Nov. 13 - Remembrance Day Holiday. No lectures.
  • Friday, Nov. 17 - Lectures follow Monday's schedule.
  • Friday, Dec. 1 - Last day of classes.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 6 - Exams begin.
  • Friday, Dec.15 - Exams end.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 20 - Grades released in Self Sevice 5:00pm.

Final Examinations

With approximately one month left to classes, final exams are much closer than they appear. The final exam schedule can be found in Self Service under the Academic Information Menu tab. If there is a problem with your exam schedule, for instance 3 examinations in less than 24 hours, it is in your best interest to contact the Office of the Registrar immediately. When a student has three exams scheduled in a 24-hour period, it may be possible to defer the middle exam with departmental approval. The final exam regulations and procedures can be found in the University Calendar.

Final exams can be a stressful time for everyone, students as well as professors. There are many on-campus resources available to all for study aid or stress management.

Academic Standing

At the end of each semester, in order to be eligible for continuance in the University, a student is required either:

  • to obtain a current average of 50% in the courses for which he or she is registered on the last day for dropping courses without academic prejudice, or
  • to have obtained a cumulative average of at least 55%.

Any student who, for the first time, fails to meet the requirements outlined above will be given an academic warning.

The continuance regulations can be viewed in the University Calendar. It is important to note that individual programs may have additional regulations for admission and promotion.
