ADVICE for First Year Students
ADVICE is a newsletter for first-year students and this September edition is your first one of the 2017/2018 academic year. The Academic Advising Centre is here to provide academic guidance to help you make the most of your experience at Memorial. One of the ways we do that is through regular monthly emails providing all first-year students current information about academic issues and resources. The September edition gives you information you will need to get a good start to the Fall semester.

The short answer is yes! The Academic Advising Centre is a place where students can get academic advice on course selection, program regulations, requirements for admission to specific degree programs, drop/add deadlines and procedures, and other academic issues.
The Academic Advising Centre has a special responsibility to students who are:
- entering Memorial for the first time and are in their first year
- undecided about their academic goals and/or program
- uncertain about course selection
- completing a Bachelor of Arts or Science but who have not declared a major and/or minor
- not yet accepted into their chosen school or faculty
- thinking about making changes in their academic program, faculty or major
- readmitted with an academic warning
- returning to their studies after a required withdrawal.
If you have not yet met with an advisor and would like to speak with one, please drop by our office in the Science Building, Room SN 4053, or book an appointment.
You can book an appointment to see an advisor using your my.mun.ca account.
- Simply log into your account.
- Click on the Students tab up top.
- Find the Student Services box and click on My MUNLife.
- You should see a tab for the Academic Advising Centre.
Through this part of MyMUNLife, you'll be able to schedule an academic advising appointment with a specific advisor for a specific day and time by appointment availability.
You can also drop by the centre during regular office hours to speak with the next available advisor. If you drop in, you may have to wait a short time but you will usually get to speak with someone. During the first two weeks of classes, some academic advisors are specifically assigned to drop-in service to help those students that may need immediate help.
The Academic Integrity Course is mandatory for first-year, full-time undergraduate students starting in Fall 2017. The course is designed to provide information about academic integrity and the important role it plays at Memorial.
All students required to take the course were automatically registered in July. The course is online and can be accessed in D2L using your my.mun.ca login. You were able to access Integrity 100A as soon as you registered for courses. The course has to be successfully completed before you receive your assigned registration time for the Winter term. Information about assigned registration time for the Winter term is sent to your mun.ca email and should be available by the middle of October. Once information about your registration time has been made available, you will still have approximately six weeks to complete Integrity 100A before registration begins.
Many students have already successfully completed the course. That’s great! If you haven’t, note that you can start and complete INTG 100A NOW before the Fall term starts.

Here are some important dates for Fall 2017:
- Wednesday, September 6: Classes begin.
- Wednesday, September 20: Last day to add courses. Last day to drop courses and receive a 100% refund of tuition fees.
- Wednesday, September 27: Last day to drop courses and receive a 50% refund of tuition fees.
- Wednesday, October 4: Last day to drop courses and receive a 25% refund of tuition fees. No tuition fees will be refunded for courses dropped after this date.
- Monday & Tuesday, October 9 & 10: No lectures. Fall Semester Break.
- Wednesday, October 11: Lectures resume. Lectures follow the Monday schedule on this day only.
- Thursday, October 12: Lectures follow the Tuesday schedule on this day only.
- Wednesday, October 25: Last day for students to drop fall semester courses without academic prejudice.
- Monday, November 13: Remembrance Day holiday. No lectures.
- Friday, November 17: Lectures will follow the Monday schedule on this day only.
- Friday, December 1: Lectures end.
- Wednesday, December 6: Exams begin.
- Friday, December 15: Exams end.
- Wednesday, December 20: Official release of final grades via Memorial Self-Service beginning at 5 p.m. Note that printed grade reports are not mailed to students.
This is a summary of some important dates for the Fall semester. As always, consult with the University Diary for a full list of relevant dates. You may also wish to refer to the Office of the Registrar's Relevant Dates section with information about registration dates and times.
All first-year students are assigned an advisor who can help you adjust to your studies at Memorial and answer some of your questions about academic life.
Your advisor may be one of your professors or you may be assigned to meet with an advisor at the Academic Advising Centre (AAC). To get the name of your advisor, check your Self Service account or the Confirmation of Registration email you received from the Office of the Registrar.
If your advisor is one of your professors, stay for a few minutes after class and introduce yourself. If you have been assigned to the AAC, drop by the office and ask to meet with one of the advisors. Your advisor can serve as a great support and source of information for you during your first year. Even if you have a question that they are unable to answer, they can direct you to the appropriate person or place.
Students are also welcome to drop into the Academic Advising Centre at any time with questions that they may have.

The Wellness and Academic Expo highlights the various health and wellness-based resources that exist on campus and in the community. As well, representatives from the faculties and schools will be present to provide information about the programs available at Memorial!

- Learn more about various organizations' operations and cultures.
- Improve your chances of securing a work-term, internship or full-time position.

- Find out requirements to obtain jobs of interest.
- Connect with education institutions regarding post-graduate programs.

Help is never far away at Memorial, especially if you're a first-year student. There are many help centres on the St. John's campus to assist you with your studies, staffed by senior students who have experience with that subject. If you are having difficulty with a particular topic, question or assignment in one of your courses, see if there is a help centre to assist you.
Keep in mind - the staff at the help centre will not complete the work for you. Make an attempt at solving the problems yourself, and then bring your work to the centre so you can get the help you need to understand the material or complete the assignment.

Beginning early in each semester, study skills clinics are available to help you make your academic work at Memorial more effective and rewarding. These drop-in sessions provide an opportunity for you to discuss your concerns with a psychologist and develop helpful strategies to meet your academic needs. In the past, students have worked on reading and study skills, time management, oral presentations, organizing knowledge for writing term papers and essays, and test anxiety. Following the intake meeting, students may be registered in an online "Academic Skills Portfolio" page in D2L for further work and follow-up. These sessions are free of charge to registered Memorial students.
The Counselling Centre is located in the University Centre on the fifth floor in UC 5000. They offer personal and group counselling services. To inquire about these services, call 864-8874. Students in crisis can drop by for assistance during regular office hours.
After hours, students in residence in crisis should contact their Residence Assistant or Proctor and students off campus in crisis should utilize community-based mental health services such as the 24-hour mental health crisis line 737-4668 (local) or 1-888-737-4668 (province-wide) or the Health Sciences Emergency Department 777-6335.
