Origin
Charles River original stock was purchased in May 1996 with a shipment of new breeders in October 1999. Pigs have been bred and kept in a closed herd since that time. The Charles River herd was validated Brucellosis free and qualified Pseudorabies negative by USDA. The pigs were dewormed, and vaccinated against the following infectious agents: Erysipelothrix, Leptospira, Porcine parvovirus, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Pasteurella multocida and E. coli.
Breeding Facility
Vivarium Pig Breeding Station, Animal Care Services, Memorial University of Newfoundland. The Vivarium Pig Breeding Station is located on Mt. Scio Road on a 6 acre farm like property. The pigs are housed indoors and have access to enclosed concrete outdoor paddocks.
The pigs do not come in contact with any other animal species. The indoor housing space has controlled temperature and light and is kept very clean. The pigs are fed Co-op Pig Grower feed. One to two days after birth the piglets are given Iron Dextran injection and their pin teeth are clipped within two weeks after birth. At the age of 12 days the piglets are given a second injection of Iron Dextran. All piglets are ear-tagged at weaning (two months of age). Males piglets are castrated, if necessary, at the age of 6-8 weeks.
